Art / Rest / Natural materials

Make room for a different kind of attention.

Barbara / Bali

A new perspective does not always begin with a grand experience. It can begin with a carved edge, the pattern of a woven surface, or a room that leaves enough space for a thought to arrive. This Bali story takes the art, interiors and objects at the centre of Barbara’s Edit and gives them a different setting.

The starting point is Ubud and its surrounding area: time with painting and craft, a pause in a forest setting, an architectural excursion and a meal that treats ingredients as ideas. Leave space between them. The value of the journey is as much in what catches the eye as in what makes it onto an itinerary.

LOOK A LITTLE CLOSER

A material memory.

Wood, woven fibre, stone and clay suggest a useful way to look: start with how something was made. Carry a notebook for a shape or a colour relationship, rather than trying to take the whole room home. An object becomes more interesting when its maker and method stay attached to it.

PLACES / EXPERIENCES

Four ways into Bali.

More experiences ↗

01 Places & culture

Begin with the art.

Museum Puri Lukisan / Ubud

Museum Puri Lukisan offers a starting point in Balinese art, with collections and an art-and-culture workshop programme. Give the work time before moving on to the shops. Notice the difference between looking at an image and understanding the setting in which it was made.

02 Wellness

Leave an afternoon open.

COMO Shambhala Estate / near Ubud

COMO Shambhala Estate brings its wellness offering into a forested setting near Ubud. Its facilities include treatment rooms and an open-air yoga pavilion. Consider it as a deliberate pause in the journey; ask the team directly about access and the experience that suits your visit.

03 Excursions

See a material differently.

Green Village / bamboo architecture

Green Village’s guided tours open a view into its bamboo houses and the thinking behind them. The interest here is structural as well as visual: how a familiar material can change the shape of a home. Tours require advance reservations through the operator.

04 Food

Stay curious at the table.

Locavore NXT / Ubud

Locavore NXT describes its approach as hyper-local, bringing ingredients and culinary experimentation into the same conversation. It belongs in this edit for the relationship between place and creative process. Explore the current menu and reservation options directly with the restaurant.

TAKE SOMETHING WITH YOU

Bring back a way of looking.

The most useful souvenir might be an idea about space, colour or how much a single object can say. Keep the source of a piece with it, and let the journey change how you arrange the things already around you.
